PhotoWalkthrough.com - Free video tutorial podcast covering digital photography post processing using adobe photoshop cs2.

PhotoWalkthrough.com has developed from a plain website into a fully blown weekly video podcast. On it I post video tutorials showing how a particular image was created using a variety of tools including Adobe Photoshop. You can subscribe to the podcast using iTunes or your favourite feed catcher. Links for subscribing either way can be found on the home page.

Initially tutorials have focussed mainly on postprocessing of a digital image but this scope might expand to cover all elements of photography.

Developing the Site

For a while we had two podcast feeds for PhotoWalkthrough; one for ipods and another for viewing on your computer. This has now been reduced to a single feed. Videos are released approximately weekly and are 640x480, MPEG-4 encoded at 30 frames per second. They should synchronise to an iPod, an Apple TV and any other device capable of playing MP4 encoded videos. They should even look pretty good on your high definition TV.

If you're not sure how to go about watching PhotoWalkthrough videos then check out our How To Watch page.

I make an effort to allow viewers to exhibit their work on the show. To that end I set an assignment in each show and then at the end of the following show I display the best of the assignment submissions. If you'd like to get involved and see your work on the show then check out the latest tutorial and follow the instruction in the show on how to submit your picture.

I'm also considering doing tutorials using viewer submitted images. If you have an image you think would make a good video tutorial please contact me and I'll happily take a look at it.

Origins

The idea for the site came from my participation in the Tips From The Top Floor forum - the message board associated with the podcast of the same name. The excellent contributors there asked me how I created an image and I decided that the best way to show them was to actually show them. I created a series of videos and people seemed to find them useful. It is, therefore, my plan to do more.

Objectives

The angle I want to take with this site is that of following a particular image through as much of the creative process as possible. I don't want this to turn into just another photoshop tips site. Tips are welcome but they should come as part of the development of an image. Ideally the tutorials page will contain a gallery of the images created here and clicking on one will take you to a page where you can see everything about how that image was created.

This site should focus not just on the mechanics of how an image was produced but also explain the mental process of the artist. It should explain why they made the decisions they did - even if it was just "because it looked nice". I hope that a typical visitor here will already be comfortable with the process of shooting a photograph and getting it onto their PC but they might be interested in the more artistic elements of the process such as how to look at a photograph and tell if it's a keeper. Or how to look at a photograph and see within it a crop or processing technique that will make it stand out.

Contributions from others are welcomed. You don't need to produce video tutorials - flash, plain HTML or whatever medium you're most comfortable with is fine. Just please ensure that your contributions are themed around a particular image. You don't have to spend a lot of time around the more mundane elements of your image creation but please do keep to the format of allowing the viewers to see the whole process even if you whiz through some parts of it. If in doubt then please contact me. I will be very happy to advise and help out. I'm particularly interested in tutorials covering Paintshop Pro or Photoshop Elements.

Making Money

Yes I'm sorry to have to bring up the ugly subject money but the fact is that it's expensive and time consuming to produce the show so I feel it's only fair to try and recover some of those costs. That's why I joined Podshow and even with the sponsorship I'm receiving through that relationship it still costs more to produce the show than it brings in.
