Source files for this image are available so you can follow along with the tutorial if you wish. The RAW files are huge so I've provided a ZIP file containing JPG extracted versions of all the images.

Derbyshire is where I grew up. As a child I saw towns that looked like this all the time. I thought this was what the world looked like. Now I'm older I realise just how beautiful and different Derbyshire looks. In this collection of pictures I've captured some of the details that reminded me of the Derbyshire I knew as a child. You can see the complete Belper collection on my Flickr account.

This is a long exposure night-time shot of a detail in the Belper horseshoe weir. The scene was lit by a single halogen light at the side of the weir, which made a single exposure of this length in the dark impossible. Instead I took a series of about 10 exposures and merged them using the photoshop HDR (high dynamic range) feature. This compresses the dynamic range of the shot allowing a good exposure of the tree and the water.

In this two part tutorial I talk about how to shoot for an HDR image and how to combine those images together using the photoshop "merge to hdr" feature. In part two I complete the image by selectively lightening and adding contrast using dodging and burning. And finally I add a tritone gradient layer to give it the blue toning.
